Theatre in
Nature Camp is an outdoor theatre camp offered to grade
school through high school students. All of our activities take
place outside in the beautiful setting of Wolf Pen Mill Farm in
Prospect, Kentucky.
In these activity and
technology filled times we want to offer an opportunity for our
children to ‘play’ outdoors. So much is learned from
being in nature. Nature begs us to awaken our senses from the
gentle nudges of a wandering stream to the more persistent taps
of June sunshine.
Our camp couples this
natural magic with theatre magic to teach and inspire the campers;
to widen their knowledge of theatre as a craft and to deepen their
knowledge of their creative selves. And aside from that our camp
is plain old fun.
Our days begin with
group activities: theatre games, vocal warm ups, voice games,
visualizations, and physical warm ups disguised as play. We than
break up into age groups and work on acting technique.
All of the work is
presented age appropriately to insure that the younger campers
are not asked to do things that they are not ready for developmentally
and the older campers are given material that is challenging enough
for them.
The latter half of
the day is dedicated to working on the script; getting the play
on it’s feet. This is quite a feat! However, theatre magic
helps us out and every year after two weeks of camp we are ready
to present our play to family and friends.
When the campers are
not rehearsing in the afternoon they are helping to build the
set, props, and costumes. We use the performance as a tool to
implement the theatre techniques the campers learn throughout
the day.
This is a hands-on
camp and the final performance is most definitely the work of
all our hands!
Free time at camp
is spent relaxing in the shade, playing in a nearby stream to
cool off and, for the older campers, walking in the woods.
